以 Longman 字典例句為例:
- Shakespeare was not only a writer but also an actor.
“a writer” 和 “an actor” 前後兩者詞性相同（也都是 “was” 的補語），也就是所謂的平行結構。如果兩者出現詞性不相同的情況，那麼這就是前後不平行，比如這幾個新聞實例：

這錯誤寫法在（英文母語人士的）新聞媒體上並不少見。這說穿了也沒什麼，臺灣媒體文章用學校中文考試標準去批改的話也是錯誤一堆。這三個例子要修正的話也不難，頭兩個例子挪動 “not only” 的位置即可。第三個例子去掉後頭的 “to provide” 。
