其中在第四段的第三句:

應該是Many plants and animals disappear abruptly (from the fossil record->介系詞片語當副詞修飾disappear)

還是可以解讀成

Many plants and animals (from the fossil record->修飾名詞) disappear abruptly ?

後面as one moves from layers of rock documenting the end of the Cretaceous up into rocks representing the beginning of the Cenozoic (the era after the Mesozoic)

as(當....時) one moves from layers of rock (which documented the end of the Cretaceous) up into rocks (which represented the beginning of the Cenozoic)

move up into 後來我找了好一陣子才知道這是一個動詞(https://reurl.cc/W1VVYk)

但是as one moves的 one 我一直無法理解這到底是指什麼東西? 謝謝。

把這兩個擺在一起剛好也通，但是沒必要複雜化。

one 指的是人 -- 文裡頭提到的 scientists (畢竟是他們在做的事)。

謝謝您的解說，我後來想了一下，所以這整句是不是可以看做:

When scientists move from layers of rock documenting the end of the Cretaceous up into rocks representing the beginning of the Cenozoic, they observed that many plants and animals disappear abruptly from the fossil record.

但是原本的句子:

Many plants and animals disappear abruptly from the fossil record as one moves from layers of rock documenting the end of the Cretaceous up into rocks representing the beginning of the Cenozoic

我會把它錯誤解讀成:

Many plants and animals disappear abruptly….as one moves from layers of rock documenting…..

->當科學家們從標記著Cretaceous結束的岩層移動到標記著Cenozoic開始的岩層, 岩層中許多動植物的化石突然的消失了

感覺語意不通順? 原本文章裡的句子這樣寫好像省略了(they(scientists) observed that) Many plants and animals disappear…. ? 謝謝。

如果這樣子能幫助你理解的話。前文已經說了"... led to a surprising observation ..."。另外就是原寫法是尋常表達，一些「(讀者)已經知道」的細節不用贅述。如果真的要挑毛病/真的需要精確敘述所有細節的話，那麼"many plants and animals disappear from the fossil record"這敘述也有問題（只是舉例，不要花時間去挑不存在的問題）。

我在讀原文章段落，讀到這句子時：

Many plants and animals disappear abruptly from the fossil record as one moves from layers of rock documenting the end of the Cretaceous up into rocks representing the beginning of the Cenozoic (the era after the Mesozoic).

"many plants and animals": 由 context 我知道這指的是他們的 fossil (records)
"as" : while
"one": a researcher, a scientist, or "you" (anyone who follows the steps/instructions/methods ...)
"moves from ... up into ..." : 想像你是一個這方面的 researcher/scientist，然後你站在那岩壁前，你的手指著岩石上的 fossil，然後你的手指 moves from 下層(... the Cretaceous ...) 往上移 up into ....上層(... the Cenozoic)

以上是我在閱讀時浮現在腦海裡頭的畫面(*1)。我沒有用到中文。

(*1) 這是我自己的體驗，不是每個人都一樣，重點是最終的整體意思理解一致即可。
